The Indian actress Amala was a leading actress in south in between 1986 to 1992. She acted in many Block Buster movies. She is a Bharatanatyam dancer and an animal welfare activist. She is the wife of Akkineni Nagarjun.
Amala was born in Kolkatta, West Bengal to a Bengali Indian Navy officer and and an Irish mother. Her birth name is Amala Mukherji. She was brought up in Chennai as their family moved there.
She did Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Bharatanatyam from Kalasketra college of Fine Arts in Chennai. Her mother supported her very much to her interests.
Her biggest achievement of her was when Rukmini Arundale rewarded her with her gold chain at the end of her arengetram, Amala credited this completely to her teacher Sharada, who trained her to perfection within 6 months. She had given many live performances worldwide.
While learning dance she also did modelling, she thought that it would be a good source of pocket money.
She is having fluency in English, Tamil, Telugu and she can understand Bengali.
In 1986 she started her film career with a classical film featuring her Bharatanatyam dance which was Mythili Ennai Kaathali, a Tamil film. When the director T. Rajendra visited her home with his wife to convince Amala's mother to let her to act in her first film only then she got into the field. Infact Amala was not planning to become an actress.
The film was a big hit, and brought Amala fame and many opportunities to act in many films in many languages. She has acted in around 50 films including number of hit Tamil movies, along with Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam movies.
She acted with Nagarjun in hit fims like Nirnayam, Siva before their marriage.
In 1987 she acted in a Kannada super hit film Pushpaka Vimana, a dialouge-less movie opposite Kamal Haasan and next she gained popularity and further opportunities to act.
In 1991 she received Filmfare Best Actress Award for the Malayalam film Ulladakkam.
She has always worked with limitations in films. Once being given an awful costume to wear, she didnt understand what to do and she burst out into tears in her makeup room, later her co star Nagarjun came to know that and he supported her. After that they became close friends.
Amala got married with popular actor Akkineni Nagarjun in 1992. The couple have a son, actor Akhil Akkineni. Naga Chaitanya is her step son. Currently she is living in Hyderabad with her family.
She practices Vipasyana (a meditation) regularly .
After marriage she had quit acting for a period of 20 years. In 2012 she made a comeback with the Telugu film Life is Beautiful and she received CineMaa Award for Best Outstanding Actress and Filmfare Award South for Best Supporting Actress for her excellent acting.

Amala is the co-founder of Blue Cross of Hyderabad, an NGO, which works towards the welfare of animals and birds. They look after sick animals and bringing them to a shape where they can be safely adopted. Amala with her team also effectively practices the scheme of sterlisation of dogs under the government approved and who recommended scheme- “ the abc programme”.
